Teresa M. Cloutier

|

Attorney at Law

"My clients are often incredible people striving to change the world for the better. My job is to light a path through the legal and political thicket and get unnecessary obstacles out of their way."

What is striking about a conversation with Teresa, whether you are discussing a sophisticated legal issue, exploring a thorny public policy problem, or seeking help with a personal struggle, is that she “gets it.” Clients and colleagues routinely seek her out for the perspective she brings to the table, including an ability to distill problems to their essence, no matter how complex or emotionally tangled. This ability is born of her unparalleled analytical skills, depth of legal knowledge, experience, and an emotional intelligence that often allows her to find solutions and strategies others may overlook.

Teresa was delighted to join the Doyle & Nelson team in 2015, after 18 years of practice in the Portland area. She now works closely with her colleagues to provide superior representation and problem-solving acumen to the firm’s clients. An experienced advocate and a trial attorney, she represents a wide-range of clients before all branches of state government, including the Maine Legislature, licensing boards, and other administrative and regulatory agencies.

In addition to her work in the administrative, governmental relations, and public interest arenas, Teresa has an extensive litigation practice focused on insurance-related and commercial disputes, including:

  • Construction litigation
  • Real estate and boundary disputes
  • Shareholder disputes
  • Creditors’ rights
  • Insurance coverage
  • Professional liability
  • Product liability
  • Complex asset divorces

Teresa also has substantial experience representing LGBT clients in family law and other cases, including adoptions.

Originally from Lewiston (Go Blue Devils!), Teresa is thrilled to be back home in Central Maine. When not practicing law, she can be found renovating her 100-year-old house in Hallowell with her wife and son, or centering masses of clay on her pottery wheel. That and she’ll do just about anything to take her kayak out for a spin.
